Why a CV for this job?

94% of employers say their filters drop qualified candidates whose CV does not match the ad's exact criteria (Harvard Business School, 2021).

  • They see what they asked for, first. Your experience that matches the ad leads, in the ad's own words, so someone skimming finds it in seconds.
  • It gets past the software. Many larger employers use software that ranks CVs by how closely they match the ad, often before anyone reads them.
  • In the language of the ad. An ad written in Spanish gets a CV in Spanish, even when yours is in Portuguese.
  • Your facts, nothing invented. Your own experience, reordered and reworded. What the ad wants and your CV does not show is listed for you to add, only if it is true. You check it before you send it.

Position Overview:

ConvaTec is recruiting a Data Solution Designer to join the Data & Analytics team, reporting to the Head of Data Platform & Business Intelligence and partnering closely with Enterprise Architecture.

The Data Solution Designer is responsible for translating business requirements and high-level architecture into detailed, build-ready data solution designs. The role ensures engineers have clear specifications covering data ingestion, transformation, storage, consumption, security, integration and non-functional requirements.

Working primarily within a Microsoft Fabric landscape, the role will maintain design consistency across data solutions, establish reusable patterns and standards, and ensure solutions developed for one domain can be effectively reused across others. This is a senior, hands-on individual contributor role operating at the intersection of architecture and engineering. The role requires the ability to work independently on complex design challenges, provide credible technical challenge, and move confidently between architecture-level discussions and detailed solution design.

The Data Solution Designer may also lead design activities or technical processes, review the work of other professionals, and provide coaching and technical guidance to junior team members, engineers and contractors.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Solution & Detailed Design

  • Lead detailed design for data and BI solutions, including source-to-target mapping, transformation logic, orchestration, error handling, security and access requirements, and non-functional requirements.
  • Translate high-level architecture and business requirements into clear, build-ready technical designs.
  • Produce and maintain robust design artefacts, including data models, interface specifications, lineage and dependency documentation, and architecture decision records.
  • Ensure designs provide engineers with sufficient detail to implement solutions consistently and effectively.

2. Patterns, Standards & Reuse

  • Establish and maintain reusable data design patterns and standards that can be adopted across the team.
  • Identify duplication across data ingestion, modelling and reporting, and design solutions that enable reuse across multiple domains and consumers.
  • Work closely with Lead Engineering and DevOps to ensure solutions are testable, deployable and CI/CD-ready.
  • Embed data quality, reconciliation and observability into solution designs from the outset.

3. Design Assurance & Technical Governance

  • Represent the Data & Analytics team at the Design Review Board, presenting designs for approval and reviewing relevant designs from other teams, projects and delivery partners.
  • Provide credible technical challenge, identifying unnecessary duplication, complexity, dependencies or design risks and recommending appropriate alternatives.
  • Provide design assurance to ensure delivered solutions align with approved designs and standards.
  • Conduct impact assessments for changes, migrations and decommissioning, identifying downstream dependencies and required sequencing.

4. Architecture Partnership & Solution Lifecycle

  • Partner closely with Enterprise Architecture, aligning detailed solution design with high-level architecture, target-state architecture, tooling direction and enterprise standards.
  • Provide implementation insight to Enterprise Architecture and escalate decisions with wider architectural implications when required.
  • Provide detailed data design expertise to support wider architecture initiatives.
  • Support the design of data migrations and system decommissioning, ensuring dependencies and downstream impacts are understood.

Key Requirements:

Essential

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in data engineering, solution design, data architecture, BI or analytics, with experience designing end-to-end data solutions.
  • Experience designing at least one substantial data platform or end-to-end data solution, covering ingestion, transformation, storage and consumption.
  • Strong experience with cloud data platforms and data solution architecture.
  • Evidence of establishing reusable design patterns, standards or architectural approaches for a team, with demonstrated adoption in delivery.
  • Strong HLD/LLD design discipline, including interface specifications and architecture decision records, with experience presenting and defending designs to design reviewers, architecture boards or equivalent formal governance forums.
  • Strong understanding of data governance, data quality, security and privacy by design.
  • Proven ability to translate business needs into technical solutions, working effectively between business stakeholders, engineers and other cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with good attention to technical detail, documentation and data quality.
  • Ability to design with a platform rather than project mindset, making appropriate architectural decisions and credibly challenging technical designs and approaches.

Desirable

  • Microsoft Fabric experience.
  • Experience working with data in SAP environments, such as SAP ECC 6.0, S/4HANA, Business Warehouse (BW), Datasphere or Analytics Cloud.
  • Experience working in regulated or compliance-driven environments, ideally healthcare.
  • Experience with CI/CD practices.
  • Experience holding offshore delivery partners to defined architecture and design standards.

Education/ Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Engineering), or equivalent practical experience.

Travel Requirements:

  • Position may involve travel 5% of the time.
